The Jenique Pro Guide

What every GTA homeowner should know
before painting their home.

Most painters won't tell you this stuff. We will — because a well-prepared client gets a better result, and a better result is good for everyone.

01

The best time of year to paint — and why it matters

For interior painting, timing is mostly irrelevant — we paint year-round. The exception: new drywall or plaster repairs need 30 days to cure before painting. Winter is actually ideal for interiors since the house is closed up and humidity is controlled.

For exterior painting, temperature and humidity are everything. Paint needs ambient temperatures above 10°C and 24–48 hours of dry weather to cure properly. In Toronto, that gives you roughly May through October.

Pro Tip

Book your exterior quote in April or early May. The best painters in the GTA fill up their summer calendars fast. Waiting until June means waiting until September.

02

Choosing the right paint finish for each room

The finish (sheen level) affects how the room looks and how easy it is to maintain. This is one of the decisions most homeowners get wrong.

FinishBest ForDurabilityNotes
Flat / MatteCeilings, low-traffic bedroomsLowHides imperfections. Hard to wipe clean.
EggshellLiving rooms, dining roomsMediumSubtle sheen. Most popular interior finish.
SatinHallways, kids roomsMedium-HighEasy to wipe. Slightly reflective.
Semi-GlossKitchens, bathrooms, trimHighMoisture-resistant. Shows surface flaws.
GlossCabinets, front doorsVery HighVery shiny. Every flaw shows — prep is critical.
Pro Tip

Don't use flat paint in kitchens or bathrooms — moisture will degrade it fast and you won't be able to wipe it down.

03

VOCs and air quality — what they are and when to worry

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemicals in paint that off-gas during and after application. They cause the "paint smell" and can cause headaches, dizziness, and respiratory irritation.

All the paint we use — Benjamin Moore Aura and Sherwin-Williams Emerald — are low-VOC formulations. Off-gassing dissipates within 24–48 hours in a ventilated room.

During and after painting: keep windows open. Run exhaust fans. If you have infants or anyone with respiratory conditions, plan to be out of painted rooms for 24 hours.

For families with young children or pregnant women

Ask us about Benjamin Moore Natura — it's zero-VOC with no discernible odour. Costs slightly more but is the safest choice for nurseries.

04

How to prepare your home before painters arrive

Clear the room as much as possible. Move small furniture, décor, and shelf items out entirely. We cover large pieces, but less clutter means a better result.

Remove artwork and mirrors from walls. You know your valuables best — better to handle them yourself the day before.

Note any repairs needed. Holes, cracks, or water stains — tell us during the walkthrough. We handle minor patching as part of prep.

Secure pets and arrange childcare. Open cans and ladders aren't safe for curious pets or kids.

For exterior jobs

Move vehicles out of the driveway. We'll protect landscaping, but clear anything fragile. Make sure your outdoor tap is accessible.

05

Understanding primer — and when you actually need it

When primer is essential: new drywall, drastic colour changes (dark to light), stains, water damage, bare wood, previously unpainted surfaces.

When primer is not needed: re-coating the same colour, previously painted walls in good condition, using paint-and-primer-in-one like Benjamin Moore Aura.

We assess primer requirements during the walkthrough and include it in the quote if needed. No surprises.

06

How to choose colours — without regretting it

Always test in your actual space. Paint a 30cm × 30cm patch and live with it for 48 hours — morning light, evening light, artificial light.

Undertones matter more than the colour. White paint has warm (yellow/cream), cool (blue/grey), and neutral undertones. The wrong undertone makes a room feel off.

The 60-30-10 rule. 60% walls, 30% secondary (furniture, trim), 10% accent. Simple framework that works.

We offer a complimentary colour consultation with every quote.

We'll look at your space, furniture, and light — and give you 3–5 specific recommendations with exact colour codes.

07

What to expect on painting day

Morning: Final walkthrough. Furniture covered. Floors taped and protected. Edge taping on trim, baseboards, ceiling lines.

Mid-day: Walls patched, sanded, spot-primed. First coat applied.

Afternoon: First coat dries (2–4 hours). Second coat applied. Tape removed before second coat fully dries.

End of day: Final inspection, touch-ups, cleanup. Drop cloths removed. Room left clean and walkable.

08

How to maintain your paint job and make it last

A properly applied coat should last 7–10 years before needing a refresh.

Touch-ups within 30 days. After 30 days, even identical paint will look slightly different due to oxidation.

Clean walls gently. Damp microfibre cloth for eggshell/satin. Avoid abrasive scrubbers.

Control moisture. Ventilation fans should run 15–20 minutes after showers.

Keep leftover paint. Sealed properly, latex paint lasts 2–5 years.

Things clients ask us
before we start.

Two finish coats as standard on all interior walls and ceilings — after proper prep and spot priming. Exterior also gets two coats plus primer on problem areas.

Yes. Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams stores have spectrophotometer readers that can colour-match almost any paint chip. Older colours are harder due to oxidation, but we get very close.

We paint all ceilings. Popcorn ceilings require extra care — thicker-nap roller, lighter pressure. Note: popcorn ceilings installed before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos — test before disturbing.

Yes, as part of prep. We handle hairline cracks, nail holes, and small water damage areas. Significant structural issues need the appropriate trade first.

Painting makes sense if the substrate is structurally sound. Red flags for replacement: wood that's soft and spongy (rot), widespread bubbling, or cracks allowing water infiltration. We'll tell you honestly during the walkthrough.

For larger jobs, we prefer a quick in-person walkthrough. For smaller jobs (single room, front door), we can often quote from dimensions and photos.

All tape, drop cloths, plastic sheeting, and debris removed. Floors swept or vacuumed. Hardware reinstalled. You should be able to use the room the same day.

We take a 30% deposit at project start, balance due on completion. We accept e-transfer, cash, and major credit cards. If cash flow is a concern, we can discuss phasing the work.
